EL City Council grants mayor power to limit public gatherings, discusses COVID-19 response

East Lansing City Council passed Ordinance 1488 on Tuesday granting the mayor the power to limit public gatherings in the event of a state of emergency. Among discussions, council invited community members from local restaurants, the health department, MSU and city staff to discuss how to keep businesses running and health a priority as students return to campus in the midst of a pandemic.

This week after backlash from the campus community over a series of racist incidents at MSU, President Samuel Stanley agreed to meet with minority leaders on campus. An Eaton County judge ruled that former MSU President Lou Anna K. Simon’s case will go to trial. In addition to covering breaking news stories like the resignation of MSU Trustee Nancy Schlichting, The State News has covered the upcoming city council election in East Lansing.
