Conservatives rally at Capitol

The Mad Hatter, Lady Liberty, Revolutionary War heroes and taxing pirates were just a few of more than 1,500 people who filled the Capitol lawn Saturday to exhibit one central idea: discontent with their government’s recent actions. Tea partiers from across the state gathered to protest federal and state tax policies, the recent passage of the health care bill and to welcome the Tea Party Express, a national bus tour that began traveling March 27, making its way from Nevada to Washington, D.C., where the tour will conclude Thursday, tax day.

New Mexican restaurant to open in May

Señor Georgio’s, which is set to open at 403 E. Grand River Ave. this spring, will fill the vacant space next to Starbucks, where eatery Brother’s Grill closed more than two months ago. Current Georgio’s Gourmet Pizzeria owners Vackis Nicolau and Tasos Alimonos plan to implement traditional Greek and Italian flavors into a Mexican menu.

Granholm praises film credit incentive

Two years after the debut of Michigan’s film incentive program, Gov. Jennifer Granholm praised the program’s success in her weekly radio address. The film incentive program, which grants film producers a refundable tax credit of up to 42 percent of production expenses, was signed into law by Granholm in April 2008.

After 26 years in its 313 E. Grand River Ave. home, Melting Moments’ owner has closed its retail operation to focus on its vending sales. Owner Mark Geovjian said a physical store didn’t make financial sense, adding the place was too large for the small share of company’s business it provided.

A burrow for donated books

The Book Burrow in the basement of the Downtown Lansing Library started out small when it opened in the 1970s. It slowly expanded and now has more than 2,000 square feet of floor space containing more than 70,000 books.

Panel discusses women in workplace

Sherrie Barr’s female dance students are not girls — they are young women. According to her, the subtle change in syntax can make a world of difference in terms of respect, something the dance industry historically has lacked in being defined as a woman’s field. Barr, MSU’s director of dance, spoke Monday as part of a panel for Wearing the Pants: Women in the Workplace, an event coordinated by student group Respecting Individuals on Neutral Grounds, or RING, and the MSU Women’s Council.

Mich. House passes emergency contraception bills

Legislation moving to the state Senate would require Michigan emergency rooms to provide emergency contraception to individuals who are sexual assaulted. Four bills, originally part of a 15-bill initiative promoted by Planned Parenthood, passed the Michigan House last week and would extend access to contraception, said state Rep. Mark Meadows, D-East Lansing.
