The State News is requesting a $1 per semester tax increase when the universitywide polls open online March 12-16. The increase would up the tax from $4 to $5 per semester. The State News wouldnt be asking for it if it wasnt needed, Editor in Chief Jeremy Steele said.

Peter McPherson testified before the state Senate Higher Education Appropriations Subcommittee on Friday about the state of science research at MSU. McPherson, Cyclotron director Konrad Gelbke and faculty members Shelagh Ferguson-Miller and Jack Harkema spoke to the committee for 30 minutes about research and the proposed Rare Isotope Accelerator project. Jewish people in Africa is not a topic most students have dealt with. But Jay Sand used music and slides Wednesday night to explain why it is an important topic for him. Sand, an independent journalist and musician, gave a presentation called The Jews of Africa, sponsored by MSUs Hillel Jewish Student Organization. Sands goal was to make people realize there are thousands of diverse cultures in Africa, including Judaism. I like forcing people to reconsider what they thought was established fact, Sand said to an audience of about 20 people.
