Soccer passion should transfer from World Cup

The 2010 World Cup in South Africa pushed soccer back into the mainstream light, and college students especially began to watch soccer with extreme passion. Their passion doesn’t have to stop with the World Cup, as MSU’s soccer team’s are worth watching as well.

Field hockey takes down No. 10 Duke

In addition to competing against the steaming temperatures at Ralph Young Field, the No. 7 MSU field hockey team challenged the No. 10 Duke Blue Devils in an afternoon game where endurance would determine the winner. The Spartans’ stamina was strong enough to shut out Duke 1-0 and win the Champions Invitational Tournament.

Heyboer powers Spartans past Western Michigan

After three games last season, the MSU women’s soccer team had scored eight goals. In 2010, through the same amount of games, the team has tallied just two. The team’s second goal came in their home opener on Sunday against Western Michigan (1-2), a game the Spartans won 1-0, but left head coach Tom Saxton confused.

Volleyball wins seventh-straight MSU Showcase

Taking advantage of its versatile depth and talent, head coach Cathy George and junior outside hitter Jenilee Rathje led the MSU volleyball team through a challenging weekend of success. The Spartans (3-0) continued their play in the MSU Showcase prevailing over IUPUI 3-0 on Saturday and then beating Evansville later that night 3-0.

George earns 450th win in season-opening sweep

In its season-opening match on Friday, the MSU women’s volleyball team towered over the Bowling Green Falcons and helped head coach Cathy George achieve her 450th career win in the process. The Spartans controlled the pace of the match throughout each set and won 3-0 in the opening match of the MSU Showcase.

Spartans earn split in opening games

It was a bittersweet opening weekend for the MSU women’s soccer team, which kicked off its season on Friday in College Station, Texas at the Texas A&M Aggieland Invitational. The Spartans defeated St. John’s 1-0 Friday before losing 3-0 to No. 1 North Carolina on Sunday.

Football camp update: Big-time big targets

The MSU offense heads into this season knowing that it has one of the top group of big receiving targets in the nation. How that group is used with regard to the passing attack will go a long way to determining how much the offense can score this season.

Allen to transfer to Iowa State

Former guard Chris Allen has decided to transfer to Iowa State, MSU confirmed Friday. Allen, who would have been a senior for the MSU men’s basketball team, was removed from the team Aug. 3 for failing to meet several obligations laid out by head coach Tom Izzo.

Football team practices at Ford Field

Detroit – The anticipation could be felt on the inside of Ford Field Thursday as the head coaches from both MSU and Florida Atlantic held a joint press conference and the MSU football team practiced afterward in advance of the nonconference game, which is scheduled for Sept. 11.

Football camp update: Young players hitting wall

The excitement of beginning preseason camp has subsided, and the MSU football team now is looking forward to the beginning of the regular season. Now halfway through camp, head coach Mark Dantonio said this is the time players usually hit the wall and need some extra motivation to get through the rest preseason.

Summer 2010 changed future of MSU sports

The world of college sports usually is a boring one during the summer months. After March Madness — the most exciting two and a half weeks in all of sports — and spring football are complete, there is not much to look forward to between April and August when it comes to major college sports. However, not only was summer 2010 far more intriguing than most summers, it also will end up playing a significant role in the future of MSU athletics.

Preseason camp for the MSU football team can be tough on students and fans who are excited for the season to begin. With the first game not until Sept. 4 at home against Western Michigan, all of the talk about football without any action can get old quickly. But as the Spartans prepare for their first game, here are four storylines that will keep things interesting this preseason.
