Cancer research fundraiser inspired by U-M prank raises more than $20,000

MSU alumnus Scott Westerman’s plea to raise $3,000 for ovarian cancer research in response to a University of Michigan fan’s game day prank has been more successful than he ever imagined. Westerman, the executive director of the MSU Alumni Association, called on Spartan fans to raise the money after “Go Blue” was splashed across East Lansing skies during the last football game against Youngstown State.

MSU football fans who attended last weekend’s home game may have noticed, and were perhaps infuriated by, the “GO BLUE” message written across the sky. But hundreds of Spartans are responding to the skywriting in a surprising way — donating thousands of dollars to ovarian cancer research. The idea came from MSU Alumni Association Executive Director Scott Westerman, who he had a sense of what skywriting costs based on his experience as a private pilot.

Ezra Robinson sentenced to court-ordered classes, fines for underage drinking and driving

After pleading guilty to an underage drinking and driving charge earlier this summer, redshirt freshman cornerback Ezra Robinson now faces fines and court-ordered classes. The Sarasota, Fla., native was sentenced to attend a victim impact panel and an alcohol highway safety class before 54-B District Court Judge Richard Ball early Monday morning. He also is required to pay $758 in fees by Nov. 15 or he will risk jail time.

As the forefather of MSU’s most well-known football lineage, Henry Bullough rarely mentioned the gridiron as he answered questions Thursday before being formally inducted to MSU’s Athletics Hall of Fame. Today’s generation of Spartans associate the Bullough name more closely with Max, senior and a three-year starter at middle linebacker, or Riley, a redshirt freshman running back.

Ezra Robinson to be sentenced Monday

Redshirt freshman cornerback Ezra Robinson will be sentenced Monday at East Lansing’s 54-B District Court after being arrested for underage drinking and driving in July, according to a report from MLive.com.

Dantonio on QB choice: "This is a day-to-day thing"

In preparation for South Florida last week, head coach Mark Dantonio informed sophomore quarterback Connor Cook on Monday that he would be starting against the Bulls. Cook then practiced all week as the starter, and redshirt freshman Tyler O’Connor worked as the backup because the coaches wanted to give him his first game experience. The public first learned Cook got the nod hours before kick off Saturday.

Defensive dominance wins another

That’s the amount of yards it took sophomore defensive end Shilique Calhoun upon picking off a third-quarter pass thrown by South Florida quarterback Bobby Eveld to find his way into the end zone for the second time that day. That’s the play that’s propelled Calhoun into the national discussion, earning him the distinction by defensive coordinator Pat Narduzzi as MSU’s “running back on defense.”
