Students rally for women, LBGT rights

About 300 participants will march through campus, carrying signs and shouting chants, to East Lansing’s 54-B District Court on Tuesday. The rally is part of Take Back the Night, a nationwide event happening as part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

When poet Ruelaine Stokes compares poetry to human expression, such as dancing and painting, she said it is all the same — each form speaks in relation to the human spirit. Drag queens and kings perform in annual show

On Saturday, the University Activities Board, RING and the Residence Halls Association hosted their eighth annual drag show in the International Center. Drag is the practice of impersonating a person of the opposite gender, but the impersonation is more of a parody, highlighting certain traits about the gender and exaggerating them to over-the-top proportions.

MSU alumus helps get donation for local food bank

Overwhelmed. It’s how recent MSU alumnus Sonny Geha felt Sunday about being the driving force behind bringing 15 tons of greatly needed protein to the Mid-Michigan area. Geha, a Grosse Pointe resident, recently took fourth place in a national Tongal video contest, which partnered with Tyson Foods Hunger Relief program to provide communities across the country with protein donations in this time of need, said Ed Nicholson, Tyson Foods Inc. director of community relations.

ASMSU’s 2010-11 budget reflects a re-evaluation of the services the organization offers — an effort aimed at getting the best price for undergraduate student dollars, officials said. Student Assembly finalized the more than $1.49 million budget on Thursday.

About 30 students left their cell phones and wallets behind Friday and Saturday as they participated in MSU’s first homeless simulation. The event, hosted by Students for Peace and Justice and Students for Social Work, took more than a year of planning.

ASMSU approves 2010-11 operating budget

ASMSU unanimously passed the 2010-11 operating budget at its Student Assembly meeting Thursday night. Total tax revenue increased by nearly $300,000 from the 2009-10 ASMSU budget because of increased enrollment and money for the Readership Program, Student Assembly Chairperson Kyle Dysarz said. Dysarz said most of the changes to the budget were meant to streamline budget costs. “There were a couple of broad things we did in terms of consolidation,” Dysarz said.

Dance-a-thon to raise funds for Africa's youth

Serving Citizens Of Uganda Today Because Africa Needs A New Ambulance, or SCOUT BANANA — a global nonprofit organization that raises money for groups working to improve conditions in Africa — will host its annual dance-a-thon from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. Saturday night at Adams Field.

MSU student receives Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship

Genomics and molecular genetics junior Tasneem Pierce is one of up to 300 recipients of the 2010 Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship. The science and engineering award covers $7,500 of undergraduate tuition, fees, books, as well as room and board for up to two years to be used the following academic year.
