Group invites students, E. L. to help in post-game cleanup

Football Saturdays are known for tailgating, rowdiness and the thrill of the game, but the Sundays after can leave the streets of East Lansing strewn with trash. MSU’s Community Relations Coalition, or CRC, will be on hand Sunday to clean-up after MSU’s Saturday football game against Notre Dame. CRC is encouraging East Lansing residents ­— both students and long-term residents ­— to pitch in at 10:30 a.m.

After two years of operating in East Lansing, Snap Fitness has proven to be fit for business. Snap Fitness, located at 115 E. Grand River Ave., opened its doors during a time of economic recession. Many businesses felt the repercussions of a sluggish economy.

Flu vaccine expected to be more effective

Last year’s flu season conjures up images of long lines, repeat visits to the doctor and vaccine shortages, but with a new vaccine, local health officials are expecting a much smoother process this year. The 2010-11 vaccine, distributed by the federal government, will attack three strains of influenza including the H3N2 virus, the influenza B virus and the H1N1 virus, said James McCurtis Jr., a spokesperson for the Michigan Department of Community Health, or MDCH. “It’s hard to say, but we hope numbers (of flu instances) will be down this year,” McCurtis said.

Block party brings E.L. community together

Crowds of students and East Lansing residents came together Wednesday evening to bring merge the two halves of a community. The event was the kick off for the Community Relations Coalition, or CRC’s, annual neighborhood block party at the Bailey Community Center, 300 Bailey St.

Lansing entrepreneur speaks at MSU Union

Lansing community organizer Jennifer Middlin spoke to a group of more than 20 students, community members and entrepreneurs from around the state at the MSU Union on Tuesday about how entrepreneurs can use social media to build relationships with their customers. The speech was sponsored by the Mid-Michigan Innovation Club for Entrepreneurs, or ICE, as part of its meeting for the month of September.

Campus sculpture vandalized twice

At MSU, there are multiple expressions of creativity throughout campus. Some come in the form of sculptures, or in something such as graffiti. And every so often, these art forms collide. The abstract red and black statue outside of Snyder and Phillips halls has been vandalized twice since the start of the semester. Bernero continues fight for TV debates

Antics about the number of gubernatorial debates to hold continued Monday evening between Democratic candidate and Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero and Republican candidate and Ann Arbor businessman Rick Snyder after Bernero unexpectedly arrived at one of Snyder’s town hall meetings. As he campaigns across the state, Snyder holds many town hall meetings that are free and open to the public; this, his 59th, was in Westland, Mich., near Detroit.
