MSU studies examine growth of social networking, smoking

Two MSU studies focusing on social networking sites such as YouTube, are helping shape how people understand the Internet, researchers said. MSU researchers have applied for a $750,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to study visitors of major social networking sites, such as YouTube and Facebook. Another MSU study found inappropriate videos on YouTube regarding sex and cigarette smoking are easily accessible to children and should be better regulated.

Michigan State’s Summer Circle Theatre celebrated its 50th anniversary Thursday with a gala and fundraiser — complete with actors in wardrobe — at the Fairchild Theatre. Proceeds from the event will toward upgrading the performers’ audio equipment.

Fixed-term employees face cuts due to budget

Under a revision to a university policy, appointments to fixed-term employee positions made on or after March 1 can be ended before contractual expiration dates for budgetary reasons. The policy requires written notice be given to the employee 30 days before the date of termination.

Program helps students recycle

This year will mark the 14th annual Pack Up, Pitch In, Help Out program at MSU as students prepare to leave for the summer. The program helps to promote environmental sustainability on campus by providing easy ways for students to recycle plastics, white paper, mixed paper, wood and carpet.

One week after he was elected Student Assembly Chairperson, Eric Branoff has resigned. Branoff gave up his seat at ASMSU’s Student Assembly meeting Thursday night to accept a scholarship to study Arabic for a year in Amman, Jordan.

MSU colleges have collaborated to establish the Martin Luther King Jr. Advancing Inclusion Through Research Award. Interested applicants must be able to demonstrate personal effort, which includes King’s passion of inclusion. The application is due by 5 p.m. Nov. 1.

Students raise money for children

More than 7,500 children in India will be vaccinated against measles thanks to a group of MSU students. After a study abroad experience at Shanti Ashram, a nongovernmental organization in Southern India dedicated to rural development, students created MSU Students Advancing International Development, or MSU SAID. They now have raised more than $15,000 for the community they worked last summer, said the group’s adviser, Dan Dutkiewicz.

Rick Foster, a W.K. Kellogg professor in food, society and sustainability at MSU, has been selected to direct the new Institute for Greening Michigan: Leveraging Natural and Human Assets for Prosperity.

MSU’s Formula One Racing Team will unveil at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Engineering Building a race car they’ve spent the last year building from the ground up. About 20 MSU students from various majors are on the team.

NPHC Week acknowledges greeks, religion

On Monday, a panel discussion about the connection between the greek community and religion kicked off the National Pan-Hellenic Council’s Spring NPHC Week — an annual event meant to end the semester and bring attention to the organization. The National Pan-Hellenic Council, or NPHC, is an umbrella organization that includes nine traditionally black fraternities and sororities.

MSU cheer club attends nationals

The MSU All-Girl competitive cheer club team finished first in the Big Ten and seventh in the nation at the 2010 Nationals competition in Daytona Beach, Fla. The program expanded this season and members attended various competitions nationwide.
