About three weeks ago, work began to figure out how the Ogallala Aquifer — which spans from South Dakota to Texas — can be better managed by its residents.
Connor Avery’s parents won’t be making the near 1,300 mile trip from Sarasota, Fla., to East Lansing this winter to plow any snow drifts out of his way, whether real or hypothetical. The Florida native’s parents are letting him do college his own way. “I’m the first child to go away to college, so it’s harder on them,” he said. But not all parents are like Avery’s, said Philip Strong, director of the Neighborhood Concept pilot program at MSU.
If any students are worried about the dreaded “Freshman 15,” a new website is offering some answers for those in the Lansing region. The site, mymacwellness.com, offers students low-cost activities to keep active and help with eating nutritional foods. The website began as an effort between the Michigan Association of Chiropractors and the Michigan Department of Community Health.
State Rep. Mark Meadows, D-East Lansing, understands the value of a good education. In his district, the biggest employer is MSU, the biggest taxpayer is the Michigan Education Association and a majority of the population is MSU students. “Higher education, higher priority,” Meadows said.

Graduate and professional student leaders might soon be rewarded with more than just glowing résumés during their time at MSU. The Council of Graduate Students, or COGS, has established a $125,000 endowment to benefit graduate students who show leadership in their departments and communities. The group set up an investment account several years ago and last year’s executive board searched for a use for the funds that had built up, COGS President Stefan Fletcher said. In partnership with the graduate school, COGS unanimously voted to donate $125,000 from the fund to set up the new endowment.

A restructuring and refocusing related to management of Breslin Center recently was announced by the Division of Residential and Hospitality Services. The changes, effective immediately, include management of programming, ticketing and marketing by Wharton Center staff for live entertainment events, according to a statement by Wharton Center released Friday.
