Canine assists in police investigations
The work just keeps coming for the furry, four-legged members of the MSU Department of Police and Public Safety. A German Shepherd known as Chico assisted Meridian Township Police in the capture of an individual after a car chase on Sunday. For his work, Chico and his handler, MSU police officer Chris Rozman, were presented with the "Distinguished Order of Canine Capturus," an award that is displayed on a bulletin board in the MSU police office. Proposed law would protect property rights
Senate Republicans announced Tuesday the introduction of two bills and a joint resolution aimed at protecting the property rights of private citizens. The bills would prevent cities from using eminent domain to claim private land and give it to private companies. Eminent domain allows for the taking of private property for public uses by government agencies. The legislation follows a Supreme Court decision, Kelo v.

Police patrol for safety-belt usage
Students who neglect to buckle up while cruising campus will be the target of a $65 ticket this month from MSU police. In conjunction with a state-wide initiative, MSU police will stake out specific locations on campus to crack down on seat belt enforcement starting today, said MSU police Sgt.

Study: Nerve tumor not linked to cell phone use
A recent study shows that the radiation from cell phones does not cause acoustic neuroma, a kind of tumor, after 10 years of using a mobile phone. Acoustic neuroma is a non-cancerous, often slow-growing tumor of the nerve that connects the ear to the brain, said Dr. Barbara Conley, chief of hematology and oncology at MSU said.

Humane Society reopens to canines
After six weeks of closure, the Capital Area Humane Society reopened its services to dogs and puppies on Friday. The shelter closed to canines due to several health problems among the dogs, including the parvo virus, distemper and kennel cough. "The issue was that people have been surrendering animals to us that were sick and unvaccinated," Gretchen Couraud, spokeswoman for the Humane Society said. The closure came when a case of distemper was found in one of the dogs, Couraud said.

City plans to extend path in Northern Tier
Plans to extend the Northern Tier Trail are currently underway as funding for the project has been made available by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. The $92,400 grant to East Lansing will extend the path, which is approximately four miles long and 10 feet wide, 5,000 feet from the East Lansing Soccer Complex to State Road.

CATA affected by rising gas prices
As gasoline prices around East Lansing shift upwards to $3.39 a gallon for regular unleaded, public transportation authorities might both detest and delight at the pump. The Capital Area Transportation Authority has seen significant increases in ridership in the past year, although the figures can't be directly linked to increasing gasoline costs, said CATA Assistant Executive Director Debbie Alexander.

Webworms invading E.L. trees
As fall approaches and leaves turn vibrant shades of red, orange and yellow, they could become an "all you can eat" buffet for insects. The fall webworm, a small hairy caterpillar that feeds on 230 species of trees including oak, black walnut, apple, maple and elm have found their way into East Lansing backyards. The worm can be found all across Michigan and its population even extends into Canada and Mexico. "They look worse than they actually are," said Gary Heilig, Ingham County MSU Extension horticulture educator.

The independent commission investigating the April 2-3 disturbances presented a four-step plan Wednesday to help increase safety throughout the East Lansing community during celebratory events. The plan, built around prevention, planning, implementation and recovery, is still being revised with input from commission members. DTN begins free Napster service for its residents
DTN Management Co. is offering free Napster music subscription services to residents who subscribe to its Spartan-NET Internet service after nearly a year of planning. Between 3,000 and 4,000 residents in 1,500 of DTN's apartment units are expected to be offered the free music download service in August and September, said Richard Laing, director of DTN broadband services. A Napster subscription usually costs $9.95 per month. After receiving complaints from the Recording Industry Association of America and the Digital Millennium Copyright Act concerning DTN residents illegally downloading music and movies, Laing said the rental property firm collaborated with Napster to rectify the complaints. "We know what our residents do &30133; they are a lot of college kids and they download a lot of music and movies which is technically illegal to do," he said.
