The weather on opening day at McLane Baseball Stadium may have been cold, but the Spartan bats were hot once again when they took on Central Michigan on Wednesday in their home-opener. MSU flexed its muscles as it improved to 15-3 on the season as the team cruised past the Chippewas (4-17 overall record) by a final score of 4-1.

As of March 14, the MSU baseball team is ranked as the 25th best team in the nation by Baseball America’s top-25 poll. The Spartans are also ranked as No. 23 in the USA Today Coaches’ Poll , ahead of No. 24 Michigan.

Coming into the 2016 baseball season, one of the biggest question marks that head coach Jake Boss Jr. had for his team was their offensive potency. After all, the Spartans are coming off a 34-23 record in 2015 where they finished third in the Big Ten standings. Boss brought in a number of transfer students to try to fill the void of eight Spartans leaving for the 2015 MLB draft, six of which were everyday starters.

According to a preseason poll released by the Big Ten on Wednesday, the MSU baseball team is ranked sixth in the conference. Each coach in the Big Ten voted on the top six teams and also selected three students from each team to a “Players to Watch” list, according to a press release by MSU Spartans.

The MSU baseball and softball teams received good news recently in the form of stadium upgrades. The Drayton McLane Baseball Stadium at John H. Kobs Field and Secchia Softball Stadium will both be receiving new electric field heating systems, according to an announcement made July 28 by the MSU Athletics Department.
