MSU Baseball defeats Air Force in exhibition game

September 20, 2015

Saturday was another busy day for Spartan athletics. Both the football and baseball teams took on Air Force Saturday afternoon, and both teams were able to come away with victories.

The Spartans pounded out nine runs on only eight hits in a 13-inning exhibition game against Air Force on Saturday and defeated the Falcons with a final score of 9-3.

The nine-run assault started in the first inning when sophomore Brandon Hughes scored on a double by junior Jordan Zimmerman. The offense was also aided by sophomores Zack McGuire, Dan Chmielewski, and Alex Troop, just to name a few.

The Spartans were also aggressive on the base paths with six stolen bases on the day, coming from Hughes, Zimmerman, Chmielewski, Troop, fellow sophomore Andrew Gonzalez and freshman Marty Benchina.

Pitching and was also stellar in Saturday’s contest with an impressive three earned runs on eleven hits, five walks, and thirteen strikeouts.

This win will hopefully be a precursor of what’s to come in this upcoming baseball season. Last year the Spartans’ season ended with a close 2-0 loss against Illinois in the 2015 Big Ten Tournament.

Although the 2016 regular season schedule has not yet been released by the MSU athletic department, it is predicted the season will begin in early to mid-February.
