National Signing Day for college football was earlier this week. For an overwhelming number of high school football players, that’s as good as it’s going to get. A select few will hear their names announced at the NFL Draft someday, but most will fall by the wayside before then.

In his State of the Union address, President Obama proposed several measures to lower college tuition. University leaders responded cautiously, warning that cost-cutting reforms might also cut into instructional quality.

With all the articles swirling around protests in the State News these days, I couldn’t help but notice the similarities among my fellow opinion writers but that got me thinking about the similarities between the protests of MSU Greenpeace, Occupy Wall Street, the online protests, and the Tea Party movement. These four protests fall into two categories: purposeful and pointless. Because of the two extremes this covers, I’ll be writing this in two articles instead of just one.

A few weeks ago, millions of concerned citizens gathered to topple a great injustice in their government. However, this gathering did not occur in Cairo, New York, or any other city around the world for that matter — it happened in cyberspace. The mass demonstration that defeated the Stop Online Piracy Act and the Protect IP Act was a major moment in social activist history and the world should take notice.

Michigan State University is by all accounts a big school. It has big sports teams, a big campus, a big reputation — and for many students, big classes.

It’s a well-known fact that this generation is amidst a social media revolution. We get our news from Twitter, make plans through Facebook and find our friends on Foursquare. There are classes being taught on the subject and businesses relying on it for new ways of advertising.

To train, to teach, to instruct, to guide — these are just a few words describing what it takes to be a coach in any sport in the world today. The fact that Michigan State University has two of the best head coaches in the nation in our basketball and football programs — Tom Izzo and Mark Dantonio — just gives us students another reason to tell our friends why we are the true leaders of this country.

Last week, The New York Times wrote about the new student activism invigorated on American campuses after the birth of the Occupy encampments throughout the country.

This week, I am writing in response to a comment collected from an MSU student in The State News article, “NCAA rejects scholarship cuts to student-athletes.” (SN 1/18) The comment suggested that NCAA student-athletes receive enough publicity already for their athletic participation, and the amount of money they save from their athletic aid in the form of tuition, book stipends and/or room and board should be enough.

Bailouts have become one of the most hated policy choices of in recent memory. Such acts affirm every fear we have of the political establishment’s unhealthy ties to corporate interests. There has been near-unanimous opposition to the bailouts that occurred three years ago.

While reading The Detroit News the other day, I came across an article about long-distance relationships and, because I’m on the brink of one myself, I eagerly read it in hopes of discovering some new information about dating long distance.

Over the holidays, President Obama appointed a director for his new and controversial Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, or CFPB. At the same time this was happening, I was checking my student account to ensure my semester finances were in order. Then, I found it; the random $10 fee that always seems to show up on my account right before a new semester.

Growing up, I started talking at a very early age. My parents like to joke that I haven’t stopped since, and they’re probably right. It didn’t take much of that talking for them to realize I was very opinionated, either.

January marks the 39th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court decision that struck down many repressive state laws criminalizing abortion. The right to make one’s own intimate medical decisions is not only a legal imperative but also empowering and provides a path toward social and political equality.

The ringing in of the new year presents many opportunities to reflect on the years past, enjoy the present holiday with friends and family and celebrate the bright promise of the future. It is a time for us to sit down and evaluate our situation, look at what went well, what didn’t and what we can do to improve.

My daughter Kelly’s graduation with a master’s degree from the University of Liverpool this December afforded my wife, mother-in-law and I ample reason to head “across the pond” to the United Kingdom this holiday season. High on my personal list of things to take in while overseas were a number of the world’s stellar art collections, cultural venues and displays.

Fate has given the Republican Party an incredible opportunity to take back the White House in 2012. Presidential elections are inextricably linked to the economy, and President Obama thinks he can buck a 76-year trend by being re-elected with such high unemployment.

I recently came across an article in The New York Times. I read that the Obama administration will be using foreign aid as a tool to promote gay rights across the globe.
