Michigan State Hockey has named senior defenseman Patrick Geary its captain, while senior winger Tommi Männistö and junior winger Shane Vansaghi will serve as alternate captains for the 2026-27 season.
Geary takes over the position from Matt Basgall, becoming the 81st captain in program history.
The stay-at-home defenseman recorded 2 goals and 9 assists for 11 points, posting a team-best and career-high +15 rating, while blocking 29 shots.
Geary has established himself as a defensive-minded presence on the MSU blue line. He was selected by the Buffalo Sabres in the sixth round, 172nd overall, of the 2024 NHL Entry Draft.
Männistö enters his senior season after setting career highs across several offensive categories in the 2025-26 season. The winger played in all 37 games and finished with 12 goals and 9 assists for 21 points, along with a +14 rating. His 12 goals and 21 points were both career bests, while his 9 assists matched his previous high.
The Riihimäki, Finland-native is known for his speed and grit as a bottom-six grinder.
Vansaghi, meanwhile, brings a power-forward style to the leadership group. The junior played in 35 games last season, missing two while representing Team USA at the IIHF World Junior Championship. He finished with 4 goals and 7 assists for 11 points and a +3 rating.
The Philadelphia Flyers selected Vansaghi in the second round, 48th overall, of the 2025 NHL Entry Draft.
Geary, Männistö and Vansaghi will lead an MSU team looking to build off of last season's loss in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, and enter 2026-27 with a new leadership group.
