Michigan State track and field traveled to Ann Arbor on Friday for the Silverston Invitational. They faced a strong field that included host Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Central Michigan, Western Michigan, Grand Valley State and Detroit Mercy. With the Big Ten Indoor Championships approaching, the meet offered the Spartans an important opportunity to improve their performances, gain valuable racing experience and measure themselves against some of the top teams in the region. The atmosphere was electric as multiple in-state programs brought energy and intensity, giving younger Spartans a chance to experience a tough road environment.

The Spartans’ middle-distance group delivered some of the team’s strongest performances, showing determination and focus. Several athletes recorded season-best times, highlighting the squad’s depth and strength. Their efforts boosted the team’s confidence heading into conference competition.

In the sprints and relays, the Spartans emphasized execution and rhythm. They used the meet to sharpen their starts, refine race strategies and simulate the intensity they expect to face at the Big Ten Championships

In the field events, the Spartans focused on consistency and technical execution rather than chasing a single big mark. Competitors worked to stay sharp throughout their attempts, building confidence and preparing for postseason competition. The approach allowed the team to leave the meet confident that it had followed its plan and improved in key areas, even if not every event produced a personal best.

Competing in Ann Arbor added to the rivalry. Michigan assistant coach Steven Rajewsky emphasized the importance of execution.

“Track meets are about execution — your race plan, your throw, your jump,” he said. “It’s about being engaged and intentional with the opportunity to compete, whether against familiar competitors or new ones.”

Facing a strong opponent like Michigan gave the Spartans an opportunity to measure themselves against one of the top teams in the conference and build confidence in their progress.

As the regular season winds down, Michigan State is shifting its focus from building fitness to fine-tuning performances. Friday’s meet meant more than results; it was about taking advantage of the opportunity to compete, building momentum and peaking at the right time. The Spartans left Ann Arbor knowing they had grown, learned and gained valuable experience. They head into the Big Ten Indoor Championships with confidence and a clear sense of purpose.
