Michigan State University’s Board of Trustees announced a new board chair at their meeting this past Friday.

Trustee Brianna Scott, the current vice chair, will begin serving a one-year term as chair in January. Trustee Renee Knake Jefferson will serve as vice chair. Trustee Kelly Tebay, the current chair, will end her term.

The leadership positions were decided under a new board bylaw that determines chairs and vice chairs by seniority. The board previously elected its chair and vice chair every two years.

The change in leadership comes amid a seemingly harmonious new era for MSU's once-embattled board.

Just two years ago, Scott ignited a clash by publicly alleging then-chair Rema Vassar had abused her power. The two trustees and their various supporters traded allegations at a tense board meeting marked by teary speeches.

After an independent investigation confirmed many of Scott's allegations, Vassar stepped down as chair (though she disputes some of the findings). The board voted to censure Scott for making the allegations publicly and refer Vassar and Trustee Dennis Denno to the governor for removal from the board (she ultimately declined to remove them). Former Trustee Dan Kelly succeeded Vassar as chair, before Tebay took over in January.

Friday's meeting struck a different tone. The board discussed the looming leadership transition in a series of cheery tributes.

"As I conclude my term as board chair, I would like to thank my fellow trustees for their collaboration and passion in supporting and championing MSU," Tebay said. "I wish them well in their positions, and I know they will provide a sturdy leadership in the year ahead."

Following Tebay’s remarks, President Kevin Guskiewicz invited her husband, Adam Zemke, to address the room. He congratulated Tebay for her achievements as chair and welcomed Scott to the role before giving his wife a bouquet of flowers.

Newly appointed chair Scott thanked Tebay for her leadership, saying, "It's been an honor to serve as your vice chair."

"I think your leadership was steady," Scott said. "It was fair. You did it with, I believe, great integrity, and you allowed us to unify."

The acclimations continued with Trustee Jefferson, who thanked Tebay for her work as chair and congratulated Scott on her new position.

"Brianna Scott, I look forward to working with you. It'll be a real honor to serve as your vice chair," Jefferson said.
