Last weekend No. 1 Michigan State University hockey swept then No. 3 Penn State with a 2-1 overtime win and a 5-0 shutout. Following the team’s performance, two players earned Big Ten Stars of the Week.
Junior goaltender Trey Augustine was named First Star, holding Penn State to just one goal. Augustine collected 24 saves in Game 1 and 36 saves in Game 2, earning his ninth career shutout.
Augustine also recorded the NCAA’s best goals-against average (0.49) and save percentage (.984) last weekend.
"[Augustine’s] always been calm, he's always athletic, he always finds a way to make the big save at the right time," coach Adam Nightingale said after the Penn State series. "The amount of times he got us a whistle when we needed it, you know, using a stick to put it up into the mesh and then we can get fresh troops out there. That's part of being a world class goalie."
This marks Augustine’s first Big Ten Star Award of the season and the sixth of his career. Augustine has now earned three First Stars and three Second Stars.
Senior center Charlie Stramel was named Third Star, tallying a career-best four points (2-2-4) in MSU’s Game 2 shutout. Stramel scored the night’s game-winner just 2:32 into the contest.
Stramel won 64.8% of his faceoffs, going 13-19 against opposing centers.
With this honor, Stramel collects his fourth career Big Ten Star Award, and his first of the season. He has now earned one Second Star and three Third Stars.
