Michigan State University will increase the price of off-campus dining plans and door rates starting May 5, according to an email from Culinary Services.

The email, which was sent to off-campus students on April 2, details several increases to the dining experience across the university’s dining halls:

  • Off-campus dining plans will increase by 50 cents, adjusting from $9 to $9.50 per meal.
  • Breakfast will increase from $9 to $9.50.
  • Lunch and dinner will increase from $13 to $13.50 (plus tax for non-students).
  • The door rate for children (ages 2-9) will increase from $6.75 to $7.25, plus tax.

The email encourages off-campus students to take advantage of the current $9 dining rate by purchasing meals before May 5 to use next year. Any meals off-campus students add to their MSU ID before the price change will remain valid.

“This price adjustment helps address the inflationary environment we are facing for many of the products we use, as well as the rise in wages,” Student Life & Engagement spokesperson Kat Cooper said in an email to The State News. “This modest increase allows Culinary Services to continue providing the high-quality, delicious and nourishing dining experience we are known for.”

Cooper referenced the resolution the Board of Trustees voted on during its April 11 meeting to increase the price of the basic meal plan for dorm residents by $214. Due to an error in the resolution, the board is set to meet Friday morning to revote on a corrected version.

Other changes to dining will also be implemented in the fall semester, according to the email, including the Eat at State app transitioning to Grubhub mobile ordering, providing a “smoother and more user-friendly experience” with mobile ordering being made available at Holden Dining and Holmes Dining halls, with expanded allergen-friendly options.
