Michigan State University Department of Police and Public Safety responded to a call of what was believed to be an individual who fell into the Red Cedar River Thursday night.
MSU Police Sergeant Matthew Thorne confirmed to The State News that after reviewing campus security footage, the individual did enter the Red Cedar River, but got out shortly after.
Local police, along with fire and rescue and ambulances, arrived to the area around 8 p.m. Eyewitness Ethan Howell was in the area when emergency services arrived.
"A guy was wearing a black wet suit, he was surfing and he had a buddy on the side with him," Howell said. "Didn’t seem like he was in distress at all but obviously you’re not supposed to be surfing in the Red Cedar River."
MSU Department of Police and Public Safety and university communications did not respond to The State News’ request for comment at the time of publication.
