In the final match of the regular season, Michigan State University men's tennis faced off against in-state rival No. 25 Michigan.
Historically, the Spartans have struggled against the Wolverines, entering the match with a 1-27 all-time record. But this time, MSU earned its first win in the rivalry since 2003 — just the program’s second ever against Michigan.
In front of a sold-out crowd, Michigan State secured its 15th win of the season, fighting hard in both doubles and singles play.
"Spartan nation coming out for the Michigan match," said MSU men's tennis head coach Harry Jadun. "We don't like those guys much, as a university across the athletic department. So awesome to see the support. I saw some other head coaches, Roger Chandler from the wrestling team was here, which was pretty cool to see. He's a huge tennis fan, so it's cool to see that kind of camaraderie."
In doubles play, the Spartans dominated, led by senior Max Sheldon and his younger brother, freshman Mitchell Sheldon. The Sheldon brothers showed off their chemistry, winning the opening doubles match 6-2.
"Playing with (Mitchell) has been, honestly, one of the best moments of my career here, and just to be able to finish it with him, and just the fact that we're good playing together is really special to me," said senior Max Sheldon.
Freshman Matthew Forbes and junior Ozan Baris followed up with a strong showing of their own, winning 6-3. With two doubles victories, Michigan State earned the early 1-0 lead heading into singles matches.
Singles play proved to be a tightly contested battle between the two sides.
Both Forbes and Mitchell Sheldon continued their strong days by winning their singles matches, giving MSU a 3-1 lead and putting the team one win away from clinching the rivalry victory.
Freshman Vuk Radjenovic fell in his match 6-2, 6-2, as Michigan mounted a potential comeback.
The final two matches — played by Sheldon and freshman Danial Rakhmatullayev — were tightly contested.
Ultimately, it was Rakhmatullayev who clinched the win, taking a 7-6, 6-3 victory to seal MSU’s historic result.
"Yeah,it's a new feeling, obviously, we haven't beaten those guys in 20 plus years, and it wasn't easy," said Jadun. "You know, we honestly came really, really close last year, and that was definitely in our guys' minds as we tried to close this one out, but they did a great job of staying disciplined, staying in the moment. And you know, Daniel, who clinched the match, played really big tennis to close it out. He didn't wait for the guy to attack him. He went and got the match. He wasn't waiting, and it really paid off. So starting from the devil's point, that gave us a lot of confidence and then singles was a battle."
With the win, Michigan State finishes the regular season 9-3 in Big Ten play and sits in third place in the conference standings.
