Psychology sophomore Nicole Becker and English education sophomore Emily Biskner work on painting Easter eggs and mini canvases at the UAB Craftopia event in the International Center on April 19, 2025. This end of the year crafting event featured painting, jewelry making and drag performances by DeeDee Chaunte and Mia Cole.
On Saturday, April 19, MSU’s University Activities Board (UAB) hosted Craftopia at the International Center. The arts-and-crafts-centered event also featured drag performances by DeeDee Chaunte and Mia Cole.
Student affairs masters student and graduate assistant with UAB Justin Babbitt said Craftopia created a space for students to come together.
"I just think it's important to give students a space to gather, and it could be something as simple as making crafts or doing something different," Babbitt said. "I think it's really valuable to provide students an opportunity to gather and somewhere safe in an environment that is just supportive and inclusive."
Secondary education sophomore Emily Biskner said she chose to attend because of what the event offered and UAB's reputation for hosting a good time.
"I love watching drag performers perform, and also UAB events are always a lot of fun," Biskner said. "I'm a big crafter already, and it just seems like a nice way to spend my Saturday afternoon."
For psychology sophomore Nicole Becker, Craftopia was an opportunity to de-stress before finals start. She was particularly excited to see the drag show.
"I mean, I love crafts, but any chance to see drag, I'm going, I'll be there," Becker said.
Performers Chaunte and Cole both delivered lip-syncing performances, with some dancing during and in between songs. Chaunte and Cole also interacted with the attendees as they crafted.
UAB utilized the International Center to host the event because of its stage and central location on campus, Babbitt said. This was a cool aspect of the event for Babbitt, since not many UAB events are held in that space.
"I think that's my favorite part ... just seeing the International Center become a part of more of what we do with UAB," Babbit said.
Attendees also appreciated the variety of crafts to do, including creating vision boards, embroidery, painting and jewelry making with beads.
"They had a lot of different options, so it was nice," Becker said.
Babbitt said events like Craftopia are important because they provide a place for attendees to express their creativity.
"We always find it super important to give students a space to channel their creative energy, because we know that's really important to their success," Babbitt said.
Biskner said the event provided a chance to spend time with friends and have fun before the end of the semester. UAB strives to give students the space to enjoy community beyond the typical bounds of university life, Babbitt said.
"I think it's really important that students have a third place to gather, outside of the dorm and outside of the classroom," Babbitt said. "I think this is something that kind of helps us get there and provide students a place to be."
