Breslin is usually reserved for Tom Izzo, basketball fans and the dancing jumbotron lady, but once a year, four organizations across campus come together to host the Spring Concert.
The announcement of the headliner for 2025 has been long awaited, since an advertisement posted on Instagram on Feb. 17 by the organizations, which displayed the date "March 27th" spelled out in mustard on a hotdog. Students have been working to put together what the ambiguous message could mean: "Is it Mustard?"
"If I'm going to be completely honest, it does not tie to the artist," accounting senior and Impact 89FM’s Station Manager Ashley Land said. "We just thought it was a fun idea and it was a fun avenue to take for this little video that we made."
The headliner was announced on March 15, through a red and yellow Instagram post, as bbno$, a Canadian rapper and singer. The artist is most known for his song "Lalala" with Y2K which went viral in 2019 due to its popularity on TikTok. The song has over a billion streams on Spotify, where bbno$ has 14.1 million monthly listeners.
The Spring Concert is completely student run besides assistance with communication from faculty, Land said. It is a collaboration between Impact 89FM, Residence Halls Association (RHA), University Activities Board (UAB) and the Associated Students of Michigan State University (ASMSU), with members of each organization serving on the Spring Concert Committee. The group meets every week starting at the beginning of the school year to plan out the concert.
"We spent several months after I first (joined the committee) talking about artist ideas, we've had meetings doing merch and things like that," journalism junior and RHA Chief Publicity Officer Mikia Lawrence said. "So we kind of coordinate everything as a whole."
The doors will open at 7 p.m. on March 27. The concert will begin with two openers, one national and one local, before the headliner takes the stage, Lawrence said.
Land explained that Impact 89FM has a "huge appreciation for music" and they want to share that by putting on an event for students. While being catered to students, the event is open to anyone.
"I think it's a great experience for students who might not have the opportunity to go to concerts, go to one with their friends here for a very decent price and have it be a good time to get away from academics," international relations senior and RHA Chief Financial Officer Lauren Pelon said.
Tickets can be purchased on the Spartan Athletic Ticket Office website. While the event is open to the public for 35 dollars, students receive discounted tickets of 15 dollars by logging in with their MSU emails. Along with the purchase of a ticket, attendees who arrive soon enough could possibly receive a T-shirt and a tote bag, said Pelon.
There will also be free ticket giveaways leading up to the event, including an on-air giveaway by Impact 89FM as well as random drawings at pop-up tables. An Instagram giveaway will give students the opportunity to meet bbno$. All giveaway info will be in collaborative Instagram posts by all of the organizations involved.
"I think this is a great way for us as tax collecting groups to come together and plan a really big impactful event," Pelon said.
