Michigan State University women’s tennis extended its winning streak to four matches after defeating Western and Eastern Michigan in back-to-back contests.
The Spartans topped Western 4-1 before shutting out Eastern 4-0.
MSU opened the day against Western but started slow, dropping the doubles point 2-1. Senior Liisa Vehviläinen and freshman Ellie Blackford stood out in doubles, earning a 6-3 victory. The other Spartan duos struggled, as junior Sarah Fazlagic and freshman Olivia Kutlova fell 6-2, while sophomore Natalie Stasny and junior Issey Purser dropped their match 6-4.
After the doubles setback, the Spartans bounced back in singles, winning four straight matches. Stasny, Vehviläinen, redshirt sophomore Oriana Parkins-Godwin and freshman Amara Brahmbhatt all came out with big wins against their opponents.
“We didn't come out well in the doubles matches, but it's not how you start, it's how you finish,” head coach Kim Bruno said. “They came out a lot more solid in the singles, it's not easy coming back from losing that doubles point.”
MSU came out stronger against Eastern Michigan, winning both completed doubles matches while the third went unfinished. Vehviläinen and Blackford dominated their doubles match, winning 6-0. Parkins-Godwin and Brahmbhatt secured a 6-3 doubles victory. Junior Matilde Morais and redshirt sophomore Hanna Tsitavets were leading 5-2 when their match was left unfinished.
MSU carried its doubles momentum into singles, winning the next three matches to secure a 4-0 sweep of Eastern Michigan.
“We were a lot sharper, a lot cleaner and the energy was better. It's hard to do — go back to back and play that much tennis — but it's part of it and I'm very proud of them.” Bruno said.
With these wins, the Spartans extended their streak to four matches and will now get a break before traveling to Lynchburg, Virginia to face James Madison on Feb. 15.
