MSU hockey head coach Adam Nightingale watches the game against Penn State University at Munn Ice Arena on Jan. 13, 2023. The Spartans defeated the Nittany Lions with a score of 3-2.

No. 4-ranked MSU hockey (3-1) enters week three of the 2024 college hockey season following a competitive series split at home against No. 2 Boston College.

Spartan fans and students poured into Munn Ice Arena to watch the reigning Big Ten champions take on the reigning national runner-up.

At a press conference Wednesday, head coach Adam Nightingale reflected on the early-season test and looked ahead to MSU's upcoming exhibition game against the University of Windsor.

"It was awesome to be back at Munn," Nightingale said. "I thought the crowd was great and the turnout was awesome."

MSU was shut out 3-0 on night one of the two-game series against BC but rebounded 24 hours later with a statement 4-3 win. Nightingale said the struggles from Friday night were cleaned up on Saturday.

"Friday night, we didn't give the fans a ton of cheer about, but it's about growing and getting better," Nightingale said. "I thought Saturday we were a lot of a better team. There are things we liked and I'm sure there are things (Boston College) liked and also the opposite. So a lot to keep working on, but we’re looking forward to playing Windsor this weekend."

Looking ahead to the exhibition game against the small school from Windsor, Ontario, Nightingale emphasized the importance of team maturation after last weekend's heavyweight battle.

"Every game is big for us," Nightingale said. "We have so much to work on in our game, so we're looking for our guys to be mature and we've got a great start to the week of practice, and the mindset is always going to be about how can we get better and how can we go out and play our game, and I think that'll test us this weekend."

Nightingale also spoke about scheduling challenges. The Spartans were initially set to play Colorado College but the game was cancelled, opening a spot for Windsor.

"It’s tough to find games at that point," Nightingale said. "Fortunately, Windsor was eager to play, allowing Michigan State to stay active."

Heading into an exhibition at home against a smaller school, Nightingale said the message this week is no different than it's been in the past.

"We have a lot to keep improving on and we get an opportunity every day to do that, so that's no different this week and that's been the message," Nightingale said. "I'm looking forward to the weekend because I think that that'll test our guys and their mentality, and I'm confident they understand the message and the expectation."

Though ranked No. 4 in the NCAA Power Rankings, Nightingale said MSU is not defined by someone's else measure of its success.

"Rankings are people’s opinions," Nightingale said. "You win a game, you lose a game, you will go up or down or whatever. The only thing that matters is if we get better, and clearly, we still have a lot to work on as a team."

With the game set to take place at Munn during homecoming weekend, Nightingale said he anticipates another electric atmosphere.

"It sounds like it’ll be packed," Nightingale said.

MSU battles Windsor on Friday, Oct. 18 at 6 p.m. in an exhibition matchup at Munn Ice Arena.
