Freshman goalie Trey Augustine (1) being interviewed after the Spartans’ victory against University of Michigan at Munn Ice Arena on March 23, 2024. MSU secured the Big Ten Tournament championship with their win over the Wolverines.

Michigan State University's men’s hockey team will be represented by USA Hockey at the upcoming World Championship

MSU goalie and Detroit Red Wings prospect Trey Augustine was added to the roster on Sunday, replacing Detroit forward Dylan Larkin due to injury. 19-year-old Augustine started as a freshman for MSU this season during the Spartans’ first-ever Big Ten Championship and first national tournament appearance since 2012

In 35 games, Augustine posted three shutouts, a .915 save percentage and a 2.96 goals-against average, earning him Second Team All-Big Ten and All-Freshman Team honors.

Augustine won Most Outstanding Player in the Big Ten Tournament and was also voted the Most Valuable Player award by his team

A South Lyon native, Augustine is a product of the USA Hockey Development Program, and Detroit selected him in the second round in 2023. The Red Wings are well represented by USA Hockey, as Augustine joins Detroit goalie Alex Lyon and defenseman Jeff Petry. Wings head coach Derek Lalonde and goaltending coach Alex Westlund are on the coaching staff

Prior to playing at MSU, Augustine spent two full seasons for Team USA, backstopping the national team to a gold medal in the 2024 IIHF World Junior Tournament. This past season for MSU, he quickly became a fan-favorite during the Spartans’ best season in over a decade.

He had a number of spotlight performances, like a 34-save shutout at Ohio State in November, saving 60 out of 64 shots in a win over No. 1 Wisconsin and even tallying an assist in the NCAA Tournament against Western Michigan.

It is a noteworthy recognition for Augustine, who will go from a Division One national title push to representing his country May 10-26 in Ostrava and Prague, Czechia
