Dread sunk low in my stomach as I embarked on the complicated process of researching, bidding and roommate hunting. I was faced with one of the most frustrating dilemmas: finding housing in East Lansing. How do I find housing that isn’t too expensive but close enough to campus? Students are forced to choose between high rent costs for accommodation closer to campus or paying less but having to travel longer distances. It’s a tradeoff between accessibility or affordability.
Commentary: To all the strangers I've befriended before
There are certain people you will meet in your life that will tear your world asunder. They’ll leave such an impression that the experience ends up sticking with you, and you’ll think of them when you’re reminded of the things you talked about or the place where you met. Sometimes those people don’t become your best friend or stay in your life long-term, but are simply strangers you’ve stumbled across in the most unexpected places.
Commentary: You don't need substances to be social
Instead of properly learning how to navigate and create good conversation, people turn to substances to survive a new encounter. It’s a shame that this is what human interaction has been reduced to. Embrace the nerves and trust that you’re welcome in the room you’ve walked into, reconsider using drinks or a quick smoke as a coping mechanism in stressful social situations.
