Michigan State University announced alcohol sales in Spartan Stadium will begin this Saturday at the football game against Washington.

The announcement comes after Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s decision to allow alcohol to be sold at collegiate athletic competitions in July. The MSU Board of Trustees later adjusted MSU’s alcohol ordinance in August to allow for alcohol sales in certain venues on campus.

Sales this Saturday will begin one hour before announced kickoff time until 10 minutes remaining in the third quarter, with a limit of two beverages per purchase.

Alcohol will not be sold at the concession stands, but instead at fixed locations throughout the stadium. Once alcoholic beverages are purchased they cannot leave the stadium.

Employees selling alcohol will have the required training and certifications to do so, and have been told to confiscate fake IDs and refer their owners to law enforcement.

Fans can look forward to several alcohol options sold at different locations in the stadium:

  • 16 oz craft beer for $12
  • 16 oz domestic beer for $10
  • 12 oz seltzers for $10

While many students celebrated Whitmer’s decision, State Senator Sam Singh told The State News that constituents living near campus told him they were worried if drinking lasted through the game — instead of ending during tailgates before — "drunken activity" would increase in local neighborhoods after games.
