Of the five students originally in critical condition in Sparrow Hospital after the shooting on Michigan State University's campus on Monday, Feb. 13 three students' conditions have improved and two remain in critical condition.

Two students are now in serious but stable condition and one student is in fair condition, MSU Police and Public Safety confirmed.

International student John Hao was identified as one of the five MSU students hospitalized. A GoFundMe was started by his roommate to raise money for medical costs.

Hao is currently paralyzed from the chest down after a bullet severed his spinal cord and injured his lungs. Hao’s parents have traveled to East Lansing to be with their son, despite not speaking English and having no way of earning any income while they remain in the U.S.

Hospitality business junior Guadalupe Huapilla-Perez has also been identified as one of the five hospitalized students. Her sister, Selena Huapilla-Perez, created the GoFundMe to raise money for hospital costs and compounding expenses. Huapilla-Perez's family, who are migrant workers, are traveling to Michigan from their home in Florida to be with her.

Selena Huapilla-Perez said the family is seeing hospital costs that will burden them during an already difficult time, as the family is away from home, unable to work and Huapilla-Perez does not have insurance.

MSU will be covering hospital bills for the five students injured in Sparrow Hospital, Deputy Spokesperson Dan Olsen confirmed.
