Michigan State University's fall semester was welcomed in with booze and business by the 4,100 participants of last Tuesday’s Back-to-School bar crawl.

This is the fourth bar crawl held in East Lansing by nightlife app LineLeap, and the largest one so far, according to LineLeap co-founder Max Schauff. MSU tends to be one of the stronger campuses in terms of turnout, he said.

“The bar crawl seemed to be a lot of fun for the students to kick off the school year,” Schauff said in an email.

To participate in the crawls, participants purchase a shirt on the LineLeap app — shirt prices range from $15 to $30, depending on when purchased — and then pick up said shirts at a local bar.

The shirts give participants exclusive specials or cover discounts at participating bars during the crawl. The participating bars were Harper’s Restaurant and Brew Pub, Dublin Square, P.T. O’Malley’s, Landshark Bar and Grill, Lou and Harry’s Bar and Grill, The Riv, FieldHouse, and Rick’s American Cafe.

Additionally, one dollar per shirt was donated to the MSU American Cancer Society, totaling a $4,100.

Social work senior Marie Huber said the event was a unique experience and an overall good time.

"The bar crawl was really fun," Huber said in a text message. "It was cool to go to all the bars in one night with my friends and write on everyone’s shirts."

Huber said the specials weren't worth it, but free cover at the bars was. She also said the lines weren't bad as long as you got there when it started.

LineLeap plans on continuing bar crawls at MSU, with a likely holiday themed crawl before finals in December, and another in the spring for St. Patrick’s Day, Schauff said.
