The McLaren CareNow at Walgreens locations have joined the federal Test to Treat Program, a nationwide initiative that proves direct, express access to COVID-19 antiviral medications to those at high risk for complications from the virus.

Patients at the McLaren CareNow clinics will be tested and seen by a provider, prescribed antiviral medication if necessary and can fill their prescription with high priority at the Walgreens pharmacy where the clinic is stationed in.

“McLaren CareNow provides the ability for those who suspect that they may have COVID to get tested, as well as treated, all in the same location,” vice president of retail clinic operations at McLaren Health Management Deborah Conlon said.

Patients can schedule an appointment with McLaren CareNow online by selecting the “Test-to-Treat” appointment. Typically, patients will be seen within the same day.

If the patient tests positive, has had symptoms of the virus for no more than five days and meets the eligibility criteria, they will be prescribed medication that can be filled before they leave the clinic.

“It's (the Test to Treat Program) very important so the individuals who may have some symptoms or uncertainty about whether or not they have COVID-19, it’s very prudent of them to get tested so that they can further help prevent the spread of COVID 19,” Conlon said.

Currently, COVID-19 antiviral medication is limited to adult or pediatric patients aged 12 and older with a weight of at least 88 pounds that have mild to moderate cases that are at high risk of progressing into serious disease.

There is no cost to the patient for the antiviral medications and patients can use insurance to cover the cost of the CareNow visit and COVID test.

Local CareNow clinics are located at 410 E. Jolly Rd. in Lansing, and 2131 W. Grand River Ave. in Okemos.
