—Following Spartan basketball legend and NBA Champion Draymond Green's announcement of his induction into MSU's Hall of Fame, Michigan State has named eight other new members to be inducted come Sept. 9.
Aside from Green, the class also includes Herb Adderley (football), Kathy DeBoer (volleyball and basketball), Joan Garety (golf), Laura (Heyboer) Heethuis (soccer), Greg Jones (football), Kalisha Keane (basketball), Karen Langeland (basketball/administration) and Bob Steele (track and field).
Herb Adderley played football under Coach Duffy Daughtery from 1958-1960. While at MSU, he served as co-captain during his senior season and was honored as an all-big ten halfback in 1960.
Adderley was drafted by the Green Bay Packers during the first round of the NFL Draft in 1961. He played there until being traded to the Cowboys in 1969.
Adderley was honored with induction into the pro football hall of fame in 1980 along with inductions into the green bay packers hall of fame and Michigan sports hall of fame.
Kathy DeBoer played volleyball and basketball for MSU from 1975-1977. She was a member of the big ten championship teams for volleyball in '75’ and '76, and was awarded the team’s MVP in 1976. DeBoer went on to work as the Associate Athletic Director at the University of Kentucky.
Joan Garety was a member of the women’s golf team from 1975-1979 where she helped lead the team to big ten championship titles all four years.
Garety was inducted into the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame in 2005 and honored with MSU’s Scholar Athlete Alumni Award in 2000.
Heyboer played soccer for MSU from 2008-2011. Heyboer received numerous honors during her time at MSU including being tied for first for all-time scoring in MSU women’s soccer history.
She currently works as the assistant coach for men's soccer at Waynesburg University.
Greg Jones was a Linebacker for MSU from 2007-2010. Jones is one of two Spartan alumni in history to earn first-team AP All-American honors twice during their career, and he received first-team All-America honors for the 2009-2010 season, the first time since the 1965-66 season.
Keane played basketball for MSU for four seasons from 2007-2011. She became the 6th Spartan to be named an AP All-American in 2011 and currently works as an assistant coach for Dayton’s women’s basketball team.
Langeland had tremendous success as the women's basketball coach for 24 seasons, helping lead the Spartans to 376 wins at MSU and multiple NCAA Tourney appearances. Langeland also served 12 years as an associate athletic director at MSU.
“I have an overwhelming sense of gratitude for everything that came from my time at Michigan State,” Langeland said. “I enjoyed the 24 years I spent coaching the amazing young women who passed through our basketball program. I thoroughly enjoyed being a part of the department as an administrator where I could not only continue to watch student-athletes grow and develop, but also our coaches and ancillary staff members. My 36 years with Michigan State were incredibly fulfilling, and truly, I feel beyond lucky to be a Spartan for life.”
Steele was a part of a three-time Big Ten Champion track and field squad, but his impact reached far more than just the track. Steele was alongside Gene Washington as people driving the integration of College athletics.

“Gene Washington got recruited by MSU because of Bubba Smith, who’s father told recruiters looking at Bubba about Gene and to get the two of them together, so Duffy Daugherty brought them both from Texas to East Lansing,” Steele said. “I was proud to have them as teammates.”
Steele was a top-flight hurdler in the late 1960s, winning the 440-yard hurdles in 1966.
“This is a tremendous Hall of Fame class, one that includes NCAA Champions, National and Big Ten Players of the Year and All-Americans,” MSU Vice President and Director of Athletics Alan Haller said. “Perhaps most importantly, as we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Title IX this year, it includes three women who were trailblazers in their respective sports following the implementation of Title IX legislation. I can’t wait to celebrate all of their accomplishments this September.”
The honorees will be inducted during the annual “Celebrate Weekend” which will start on Thursday with a Varsity Letter Jacket Presentation. Then they will be inducted on Friday and celebrated once more at the Michigan State-Akron football game on Sept. 10.
