Severe thunderstorms are predicted to occur in the Lansing area on Monday night.

Thunderstorms are expected to reach the Lansing area around 5 p.m., with winds of up to 60 to 70 mph, forecasters said. The National Weather Service, or NWS, said that those in the southern lower Michigan should be prepared for “a swath of damaging winds” that could lead to power outages or fallen trees.

The Michigan Weather Center also said that Lansing is one of the cities at risk for isolated large hail, flooding and tornadoes.

Lansing will also be under a heat advisory, effective from noon Tuesday until 10 p.m. Wednesday. NWS predicts that temperatures will reach 103 degrees.

"The combination of temperatures reaching into the low-to-mid 90s with dew points in the lower-to-mid 70s will result in conditions that will be hazardous to anyone outside for an extended period of time," NWS said in an advisory.

To take precaution, NWS said that individuals should stay out of the sun, stay hydrated and call 911 in the case of heat stroke or emergency.
