Gov. Gretchen Whitmer will take on the role of co-chair for the Inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, according to a release Monday.

Whitmer was named to the Presidential Inaugural Committee (PIC) alongside Chair Rep. James E. Clyburn (D-S.C.), Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, Louisiana Rep. Cedric Richmond and Delaware Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester.

In the news release sent Monday, Whitmer said she was humbled to be a part of process.

“This inauguration will exemplify the strength and resilience our country has demonstrated throughout this entire year and set the stage for how the Biden-Harris Administration will beat the pandemic, create jobs that fuel economic recovery, and unite all Americans,” Whitmer. “While we are going to focus on keeping people safe this year, we will make sure Americans have the opportunity to celebrate this pivotal moment for our country.”

Biden is set to be inaugurated on Jan. 20, 2021. This comes following a series of lawsuits by the Donald Trump campaign claiming voter fraud in the presidential election, including an investigation by the state Senate claiming irregularities in the results.

On Nov. 23, the Michigan Board of State Canvassers voted to certify the general election results, confirming Biden defeated Trump by more than 150,000 votes.

According to the release, the co-chairs will help guide the PIC through planning and organizing historic inaugural activities that will prioritize keeping people safe while engaging with Americans across the country.

“These leaders reflect the strength, spirit, and diversity of America and have always held a steadfast commitment to restoring the soul of the nation, building back the middle class, and unifying the country," Biden said. "We are proud of their support and know they will help plan an inauguration that will reflect our nation’s shared values."
