East Lansing Mayor Aaron Stephens released a satirical public service announcement on Wednesday urging community members to avoid individuals who refuse to follow mask and social distancing guidelines.

Stephens said he went around downtown after being sent pictures of students outside not social distancing. Rather than calling the police or getting public health involved, he decided to talk to them himself, handing out masks and explaining to them that they should be social distancing if they are not a part of the same household.

“Most of them said yes and were very understanding, except one guy — let’s call him Chad,” Stephens said in the announcement. “Chad walked up to me, got way too close for comfort and sprayed in my face that ‘beer and a mask just don’t mix.’”

Stephens decided he wanted to take the anger from that encounter and turn it into something positive.

“So, while I’ve done a few PSAs in my time, this one’s a little bit different," Stephens said. "This one goes out to those that are hosting the responsible outdoor gatherings. Don’t invite Chad. In fact, until he realizes we’re in a global pandemic and putting a piece of cloth over your face actually saves lives, don’t talk to Chad. Chad sucks. Because if your beer is more important, is more important than the lives of more than 150,000 Americans who already died from this virus, you’re an a------ and I, and every other community leader, are getting really tired of dealing with you.”
