Michigan State University plans to implement contactless move in for the fall 2020 semester, with additional social distancing policies, according to an email sent to students from the Housing Assignments Office.
Fall move-in will take place by appointment between Aug. 27 and Aug. 31. Per an announcement today, masks will be required on campus.
New and returning students will be assigned a move-in time, which they must follow unless they receive a time to change it.
The student is the only one that can check into their room and must have a government issued ID. They can only bring two people to assist them.
Students will still have the option to stay until the end of the semester on Dec. 11 or move out once in-person instruction is over on Nov. 25 and receive a credit to their student account. Credit will be reflective of the type of room the student is in.
Some double rooms will become singles, and all furniture will be six feet apart.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that residence halls at full capacity bring the highest risk of spreading COVID-19 for colleges and universities.
“Bed placement that will allow for at least 6 feet of sleeping head-to-head social distancing, when measured one foot from the headboard,” according to the housing website. “We will continue to ensure furniture placement does not create any egress or code issues.”
They ask for students to not move the configuration of the rooms.
If at least one of these conditions does not exist, the space will be reclassified within the housing system.
There will be enhanced and increased cleaning of public areas, and cleaning supplies and hand sanitizing stations will be available, according to the statement.
“Professional and student staff are receiving additional training regarding the health and safety regulations and you will be able to direct questions to your Resident Assistant (RA), your Community Director (CD) or Residence Director (RD), Facilities Staff, or your hall or apartment service center desk,” according to the housing website.
