Due to a gas main leak, motorists and pedestrians are being advised to avoid the area of Abbot Road and Albert Avenue for the rest of the day.

According to East Lansing Police Department Capt. Chad Connelly, the leak was stopped at approximately 5:15 p.m., but repair to the damaged pipe is expected to take “a couple more hours.”

Consumers Energy is in the process of repairing the pipe, Connelly said.

“We are still currently controlling traffic to keep people out of the area, but the gas leak has been stopped and they are in the process of repairing the damage,” Connelly said.

The open-air dining area on Albert Avenue will be closed for the remainder of the day due to the leak.

Communications Coordinator Mikell Frey was unavailable for comment at the time of publication.
