The third floor of the MSU Library is clear of people after MSU halted in-person classes due to the coronavirus on March 11, 2020.

Michigan State University is continuing its original suspension of face-to-face instruction into the summer semester, according to an email sent out Thursday afternoon by Interim Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs Teresa Sullivan.

"As part of our continued commitment to your academic progress and your health and wellness, MSU has made the decision that MSU will offer only online courses during Summer 2020 Full Session and Session One," Sullivan said in the email.

If you are a student who is currently enrolled in either of these sessions for in-person classes, you do not need to do anything special to remain enrolled — the classes are being migrated to the new online status automatically.

It is possible that Session Two will also switch over to online, depending on the spread of COVID-19.

Exceptions for clinical courses in the health science areas are being considered, but a decision has not fully been made at this time, according to Sullivan.

Additionally, the university will be expanding their summer course offerings over the month of April, taking a step beyond the in-person classes that are already now becoming online classes. For students, this means that there will be extra opportunities to earn credits over the summer and make progress on their degree paths regardless of their physical locations.

"Between now and the start of summer classes on May 11, faculty will be working hard to ensure that summer online offerings are of the same high-quality educational experiences that you have come to expect from your MSU classes," Sullivan said in the email. "Throughout the summer, MSU will continue to invest in its online courses and online teaching infrastructure to ensure that regardless of how the COVID-19 pandemic might impact travel in the future, MSU will provide pathways for you to continue to learn and make your way toward graduation."
