After the COVID-19 pandemic drew many concerns about safety at events, Grandparents University, scheduled for late June, has been canceled.
"Recognizing the fluidity of the novel coronavirus pandemic, MSU made the difficult decision to cancel Grandparents U," Michigan State University Deputy Spokesperson Daniel Olsen said in an email. "The health and safety of our Spartans and guests remains our top priority."
Grandparents University is a program run by the MSU Alumni Office. It is designed for grandparents and grandchildren to spend time together while at MSU, they experience 3 days of exploring campus, staying in residential halls and attending classes. The program allows for grandparents who graduated from MSU to relive their college experience and share it with their grandchildren.
However, given that the majority of attendees are a part of a higher risk population for COVID-19 the program has been canceled. This decision was made to ensure the safety of all participants and to lower the risk of spreading the illness.
"Registered participants will receive a full refund and preferred registration for next year’s program, and those who received a scholarship for the 2020 program will receive the same scholarship amount for the 2021 program," Olsen said via email. "Additionally, children who would have been 12 years of age for the 2020 program will receive an additional year of eligibility to participate in next year’s program."
The program is still planning on continuing in 2021 and registration for this event will open in early March of 2021.
