Part-time Michigan State University dining hall employees received an email on Tuesday that falsely announced that they would be laid off.

The email was "premature," according to officials.

"Our communications got out in front of us on this one," MSU deputy spokesperson Dan Olsen said. "The university sincerely regrets that."

"This is a very fluid situation and ... we are working very hard to keep our dining hall staff working at this point," Olsen said.

Employees should not expect any layoffs or loss of their jobs at this point, he said.

"All staff, including students and on-call, should continue report to work if they would like to and are willing and able to do so," Olsen said.

The email comes after MSU moved all classes online and closed in-person dining, shifting all dining halls to take-out only.

Editors note: This story was changed at 8:35 pm to eliminate the word 'department' and to add 'at this point' to Dan Olsen's quote.
