People walk through Wells Hall after MSU canceled classes due to coronavirus March 11, 2020.

Two Michigan State students tested positive for the coronavirus that causes COVID-19, according to an Ingham County Health Department release published on Thursday.

Both students have a history of international travel. One student returned to Ingham County after participating in a study abroad trip and is currently in isolation. The second student was diagnosed after leaving the country.

The Ingham County Health Department is investigating to determine if additional people were exposed and is contacting people who were in close contact with either case.

“People must diligently practice social distancing at this time,” said Ingham County Health Officer Linda Vail. “We have no doubt that coronavirus is in the community, and we know that not everyone who has it will be sick. This is why it is so important to distance yourself. People who are sick should isolate themselves at home whether they’ve been tested or not. Act as though you have it if you have symptoms that resemble COVID-19."

In an email sent to the MSU community, President Samuel L. Stanley Jr. said both individuals are being treated, and neither person is currently on campus in East Lansing. The cases are unrelated to each other.

"I expect that each member of our university community will continue to support one another during this health crisis," Stanley said. "The university continues to work closely with local and state health departments and follow all appropriate steps to mitigate further spread on campus and in our communities. The new cases announced today underscore the important health and safety decisions MSU is making to keep us all healthy and safe."

This follows a new report from state health officials that the total amount of cases in Michigan reached 334.

This is a developing story and will be updated shortly. In our reporting, we'll focus on verifying information from credible sources. Stay with The State News for more updates on how COVID-19 is affecting the MSU and East Lansing community.
