East Lansing Police Department, or ELPD, is investigating an armed robbery and sexual assault at an apartment complex in the 2500 block of Abbot Road, according to a statement from ELPD. The incident occurred this morning just after 6 a.m.

"The suspect is described as a college-age black male that is approximately 5 feet 9 inches tall. He was wearing dark clothing, including a black, zip-up hooded sweatshirt and partial face covering," according to the statement. "He was armed with a silver revolver and is believed to be right-handed."

The suspect entered the apartment through an unlocked door, armed with a handgun, according to the statement. While inside, the suspect physically and sexually assaulted three female victims.

"The injuries are described as non-life threatening, however they did require some medical attention," ELPD Deputy Chief Steve Gonzalez said. "All three of the victims."

The suspect also stole various electronics from the victims, according to the statement.

"I think it’s always important for people to understand that practicing basic safety measures is very helpful," Gonzalez said. "We always urge people to make sure that their doors are locked, be aware of their surroundings and they are coming and going from either their work or class or their home."

In a place like East Lansing where multiple people could be living at one location, Gonzalez also encourages people to maintain diligence in safety precautions between hectic schedules.

"We just want to reiterate and stress to look out for your roommates, look out for your residents and make sure that in that hectic schedule you’re not forgetting to lock doors or leave porch lights on at night," he said.

This is an active investigation and ELPD detectives are currently following leads, according to the statement. Local residents with any information are encouraged to call the ELPD Detective Bureau at 517-319-6884.
