Following a national search, a new director of undergraduate admissions has been appointed at Michigan State University. John Ambrose — who has been acting as interim executive director of the Office of Admissions — was appointed to the role.
The national search for the executive director of admissions will be renewed and a new enrollment strategy is expected to begin in early 2020.
“The Office of Admissions continues to evolve and address MSU’s future challenges by strategically recruiting new Spartans,” Interim Provost Teresa Sullivan said in a university press release. “I’m very pleased John Ambrose will lead MSU admissions as we engage members of the internal and external MSU communities in collaborative approaches to recruit domestic and international students.”
In 2008, Ambrose began his time at MSU as senior associate director for inclusion, strategic planning and student success. The role served as an opportunity for him to develop recruitment initiatives for students to promote a more balanced and diverse community at MSU.
Before Ambrose took over the role as director of undergraduate admissions, the office was led by Jim Cotter. Cotter now serves as Varsity S Club director in the athletics department and will be given the title of executive director of admissions emeritus in honor of his 35 years at MSU.
“For more than 10 years, Jim Cotter guided one of the most diverse groups of professionals I have ever worked with,” Ambrose said in the press release. “The impact of his inclusive leadership style is not just local but national and global.”
