President Samuel L. Stanley Jr. accepted Satish Udpa's resignation from his position as MSU executive vice president Monday. Udpa will return to lab work and research for the College of Engineering, according to a university press release.

Udpa had been serving as the executive vice president since 2013, and he was unanimously approved by the Board of Trustees to serve as interim president after John Engler's resignation in January 2019. He served in the role while the presidential search was underway, until Stanley was chosen to permanently fill the position.

"While I greatly appreciate the opportunity over the past years to serve in an administrative role, my passion lies in the lab, and I’m eager to get back to it," Udpa said in the release.

Prior to serving as interim president and executive vice president of administration, Udpa was appointed chairperson of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering before becoming the dean of the College of Engineering.

According to the press release, Stanley has already begun meeting with the vice presidents that reported to Udpa. They will be reporting to him on an interim basis while he reconsiders the organizational structure of the university.

In an email to the MSU community, Stanley said he is "saddened" to accept Udpa's resignation from his administrative position.

“Satish’s contribution, especially over the past year, has been vital to the university community," Stanley said in the press release. "His stalwart and caring leadership is extremely authentic, something that so many pointed out to me when I started my role here at MSU. But I respect his wishes and desire to get back into the lab and the field that he enjoys.”
