The two-story, green and white McDonald's restaurant on East Grand River Avenue near Michigan State's campus caught fire just after midnight on Monday, forcing patrons and employees to evacuate the building.

East Lansing Fire Captain Leo Allaire said the cause of the fire is "undetermined" and is under investigation by the fire marshal.

According to officials, the establishment was open and serving customers when the fire broke out, but there were no injuries and everyone inside self-evacuated with little difficulty, Allaire said.

"The origin of the fire started in a storage room," he said. "It consumed a lot of the paper and plastic materials, cartons and stuff like that that they package their food in."

The East Lansing Fire Department was assisted by the Meridian Fire Department and Lansing Fire Department.

The McDonald's will continue to be closed until repairs are complete. The restaurant's re-opening date is unknown.
