A Media Innovation Lab created by MSU and WKAR will have a kick off event Thursday with a ribbon cutting ceremony. President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., Dean of the College of Communication Arts and Sciences Prabu David and WKAR’s general manager Susi Elkins are among the guests who will be in attendance.

This event will give insight on the new lab, which will feature the next generation of television broadcasting, NextGen TV.

NextGen TV has different components which relate to education, mobile technology and emergency alert systems. It is a part of the ATSC 3.0 TV standard that is being experimented by the FCC, according to a press release.

This feature creates a new on-air broadcasting experience that will allow broadcasters to add internet style information and interactivity to their broadcasts. Some more advanced technologies such as surround sound are also among the features.

Multiple demos, presentations and discussions will take place following the ribbon cutting and news conference. Eventually, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in touring Spartan Mobility Village.

The schedule of the day is below.

  • Demos and presentations from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
  • News conference and ribbon cutting ceremony from 1:30 p.m. to 2:15 p.m.
  • Touring of Spartan Mobile Village from 2:45 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The events will take place at the MSU Communication Arts and Sciences Building.
