MSU professor and East Lansing High School coach dies of heart attack

Ed Outslay, a Michigan State professor in the Broad College of Business and an assistant baseball coach at East Lansing High School, died yesterday at age 67.

According to East Lansing Info, Outslay died during a pregame workout at MacDonald Middle School.

The MSU Broad College of Business said Outslay was a passionate academic, impactful mentor and devoted community volunteer in a news release posted today on its website.

Outslay had taught accounting, and started teaching at MSU in 1980. Last year, he and two colleagues were recipients of the 2018 American Taxation Association (ATA)/Deloitte Teaching Innovation Award, the Broad College said in the release. He was the co-author of three tax textbooks, he testified before the U.S. Senate Finance Committee and he made presentations to the Treasury, IRS and Office of Tax Analysis.

He also won the Distinguished Faculty Award and Curricular Service-Learning and Civic Engagement Award.

For his coaching career, Outslay won the 2003 AFLAC National Assistant Coach of the Year award when it was his ninth coaching season at East Lansing.
