Upcoming construction projects on Michigan State's campus

April 5, 2019

Here are four upcoming construction projects on Michigan State's campus.

McDonel Hall deteriorating domestic water replacement

McDonel Hall has been using its original water supply system since its construction in 1963. Repairs are no longer effective, so the original water supply system must be replaced.

According to the project memorandum, the project has a budget of $1.5 million, including a $150,000 contingency. The project will be funded mainly by Residential and Hospitality Services.

The construction is expected to begin in May and will be completed in August.

IM-Sports West outdoor pool upgrade

The outdoor pool is original to the IM-Sports West building. The outdoor pool has received improvements since it opened in 1958, but the pool is at the end of its life, according to the project memorandum. For meeting current NCAA regulations, as well as providing capacity for recreation and fitness activities, an upgraded outdoor pool will be done this summer.

According to the memorandum, it will address Americans with Disabilities Act access and code compliance issues, removal of the diving tower and leveling the deep end of the pool to a standard 6-foot depth. The project will also examine options to enclose the pool with a cost-effective retractable system to allow for swimming year-round.

The preliminary project cost estimate is from $6 million to $10 million.

The source of funds for the project is expected to be from a combination of gifts, the general fund and auxiliary activities fund.

This project will start in June, and the pool will be ready for use next March.

Munn Ice Arena Expansion

Munn Ice Arena opened in 1974. The home of MSU Hockey, it hosts classes, club sports, sports camps and public skating opportunities.

According the memorandum, the project is anticipated to include a new public front door with memorabilia, the expanding and relocating of the hockey operations offices and coaching offices from the basement to the renovated first floor, the improving of the quality of the varsity facilities, the improving of the public skating experience by adding concessions and providing an appropriate lobby, skate changing, skate rental and pro shop, the redesigning of all entries and the ability to keep the conditioned air inside at peak periods. The completed expansion is expected to be able to hold 6,800 people, the arena currently holds about 6,400.

The preliminary project cost estimate is around $15 million.

The source of funds for the project is expected to be mainly gifts and the project schedule has not been determined.

Biological Safety Level-3 research laboratory containment addition

In support of faculty research in the colleges of Natural Science and Veterinary Medicine, the Biological Safety research laboratory will have additions on its capacity for reaching ongoing research goals.

MSU currently supports such research within only two modular containment trailers, and they are at capacity. The project is going to increase the university’s ability to study various types of pathogens. According to the memorandum, the project aims to find potential locations for installation of a modular unit or renovation of existing space that can accommodate the harmful pathogens.

The preliminary project cost estimate is between $1.5 and $2.5 million.
