Brothers from MSU's Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity, of which Daniel Renzulli was a member, organized the event and provided candles to attendees. Friends said he had a contagious smile and the ability to brighten anyone's day.

"He was always beaming from ear to ear...he was one of the people that you go to," said finance senior Andrew Nottmeier, one of Daniel Renzulli's best friends and a member of Alpha Sigma Phi. "And no matter what kind of mood you're in, five minutes into a conversation you're smiling."

Members of the fraternity took turns at the microphone recounting memories of Daneil Renzulli, sharing stories about his love for flying, his genuine interest in helping others and late nights playing Super Smash Bros.

Alpha Sigma Phi President Chris Heilman recalled Renzulli's friendliness an how he made others feel better.

"After the library one night, I was very stressed, and I walked into one of the brother's rooms and there was Dan and a few other guys and they were just playing Super Smash Bros," Heilman said. "I ended up sitting down and playing with Dan and the other guys for two more hours, lost track of time."

Daniel Renzulli's mother, Lori, and his sister, political science sophomore Meredith Renzulli, attended the vigil and received comforting remarks from his friends throughout the evening.

A recurring theme throughout the evening was how Daniel Renzulli always worked to improve the spirits of those around him. 

"Every single person in this house — he burdened their burdens," Nottmeier said. "During finals week, he was helping all of his friends and his brothers before he even took care of himself."

Mira Crain, a childhood friend of Daniel Renzulli, shared a story of a time he cheerfully greeted her while she was walking to class to take an exam, making her day.

"He saw me and was like 'Hey Mira!'" Crain said. "And I think it was at 10 a.m., and I was still very tired, and that just made my day and made me so much less nervous about my exam.”

After the testimonies concluded, everyone was asked to sign the Rock — which was painted by Alpha Sigma Phi in memory of Daniel Renzulli beforehand — with a personal message. Cookies and hot chocolate were also provided as attendees stayed afterward to share more stories and console each other.

"People overuse the statement, 'He was one in a million,'" Nottmeier said. "But I honestly can't think of anything else to better fit the kind of person that he was."
