Andrea Amalfitano — current interim dean of Michigan State University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine — has been recommended to serve as the college’s dean. The appointment will be effective Dec. 14, if approved by the Board of Trustees.
Amalfitano took over the position Feb. 16 — three months after the former dean of the college, William Strampel, stepped down in December for medical leave.
In March, pornography was discovered on Strampel’s personal and work computers during an investigation into MSU’s handling of sexual abuse. Strampel, former boss of Larry Nassar, was arrested. He currently faces charges of one count of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct, two counts of willful neglect of duty and one count of felony misconduct in office.
Prior to taking over the position of interim dean, Amalfitano served as the director of MSU’s Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute. He was also a professor of microbiology and molecular genetics and pediatrics.
“I can't imagine a greater honor than leading the college that gave me my start in osteopathic medicine,” Amalfitano said in a press release. “This college prepares outstanding physicians, and I plan to focus on building an even better student experience, strengthening our already impressive faculty research portfolio and working with our colleagues in the university’s health colleges to provide exceptional clinical care.”
Before coming to MSU in 2005, Amalfitano was an associate professor at Duke University in its Department of Pediatrics and the Department of Pathology, Molecular Genetics and Microbiology.
In 1984, Amalfitano earned a bachelor's degree in microbiology and in 1989 he completed his Ph.D. in the same field. Both degrees were from MSU.
