Ex-MSU and USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar's medical license has been permanently revoked by the state Board of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery, according to the Attorney General's office.
The Board also fined Nassar $1 million, which is to be paid following payment of the other fines and restitution that came about as a result of his criminal convictions.
The fine is exceptionally high — usually max out around $20,000, according to Andrea Bitely, Schuette's communications director. She said Nassar will likely never pay the $1 million fine, but the Board thought it was important to "make a statement that this type of behavior shouldn’t be tolerated."
"The Attorney General applauds this decision by the Board," Bitely said in a statement.
The actions come in response to a second complaint filed by Attorney General Bill Schuette against Nassar based on his criminal convictions.
Schuette's office had filed an earlier complaint, but was unable to get a permanent revocation of Nassar’s medical license due to limitations in the Public Health Code, according to Bitely.
Nassar is currently serving a 60-year sentence in federal prison on child pornography charges. He was also sentenced to 40 to 175 years in Ingham County and 40 to 125 years in Eaton County on charges of first-degree criminal sexual conduct.
